Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair and Decoration of Corporation Dwellings.

12.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the maintenance department of the Dublin Corporation takes upwards of six months to complete the exterior repair and decoration of Corporation dwellings; and if he will hold an enquiry into the workings of that department.

I am aware that it has been the practice of Dublin Corporation for some time to carry out routine exterior repairs and decoration in their housing schemes on a bulk basis for large numbers of houses. Under this system, which has reduced costs by up to 25 per cent. successive stages of the work are executed in turn by different classes of specialised workers. I am informed by Dublin Corporation that in the normal way under this system completion of all the stages of the work on an individual house should take about one month. I see no necessity for holding an inquiry as suggested but if the Deputy will furnish particulars of specific cases where it took upwards of six months to complete the jobs, I am prepared to obtain reports on them.
