Vol. 183 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment on Wexford Drainage Scheme.

1.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare why a man (name and address supplied) was not submitted for consideration for work on the Kilmore-Ballyteigue drainage scheme.

The man referred to was not submitted for the work in question as he was over the age limit specified by the employing Authority.

Will the Minister venture an opinion as to what will happen to a man like that, a man of 63 years of age? Is he not to be allowed to work in the country?

There is no suggestion of that. I am over 63 myself and I work in the country.

The Minister is a pretty good worker.

The work in question requires a man to be physically strong.

Was it because he was not physically strong or that he was 63 that his name was not submitted?

As the former Minister for Social Welfare knows, we have to suit the conditions laid down by those who come to the labour exchanges. We are not in a position to foist upon them those whom we may wish them to employ.

Would the Minister answer the question? Is it because the man was not capable of doing the work or is it merely because he was 63 years of age?

The limitation was laid down by the employing authority that the age must be considerably under 63.

Then it is the Department of Social Welfare that determines whether or not a man is physically suitable to do a job?

We send people the type of person they ask for.
