asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the conditions under which telephone tapping is permitted.

Interception of telephone conversations is only carried out in very exceptional cases where the public interest requires it, and then only in obedience to warrants issued in those cases by the Minister for Justice under Section 56 of the Post Office Act, 1908.
