Vol. 183 No. 4

Written Answers. - Vocational School Scholarships.

21.

asked the Minister for Education the percentage of pupils attending daytime classes at vocational schools who hold scholarships provided by his Department or county or borough councils in (a) 1957-58 and (b) 1958-59.

The percentage of pupils enrolled on wholetime day courses at vocational schools holding scholarships provided by county or borough councils was .01 in 1957/58 and .009 in 1958/59. Scholarships tenable at such wholetime day courses are not awarded by my Department but scholarships and free places tenable at these courses are awarded by Vocational Education Committees. These Committees awarded 841 such scholarships in 1957/58 and 987 in 1958/59. I regret that the statistical returns furnished annually to my Department by the Committees do not contain information as to the number of free places awarded.
