Vol. 183 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Department of Justice: Duties of Assistant Secretary and Assistant Principal Officer.

5.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice the duties on which the person appointed as an assistant secretary in his Department within the past year is now engaged, and the increase in the volume of such duties in his Department within the past three years.

The officer referred to is engaged on duties relating to the general staffing of the Department and its sub-offices, on work arising in the Department in connection with the Courts of Justice Acts, on supply and establishment work for the Garda Síochána, including the Garda Conciliation and Arbitration Scheme, and with certain portions of work arising in connection with prisons. The volume of these duties is now substantially greater than in the years prior to 1952 when a post of Assistant Secretary was abolished; experience in the intervening period has established the need for reviving the second post of Assistant Secretary in my Department.

6.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice the duties on which the person appointed as an additional assistant principal officer in his Department within the past year is now engaged; if he will state the increase in the volume of business during the last three years in the division of the Department in which the said officer operates; and what position in his Department was held by the officer in question immediately prior to his appointment as assistant principal officer.

The officer referred to is engaged on duties relating to the study and survey of crime. The staffing position in the Department for some years past was such that the work in question had to be left in abeyance to a large extent, and could be performed only by the appointment of an additional officer. Prior to his appointment as Assistant Principal Officer, the officer referred to held the position of Higher Executive Officer and acted as Private Secretary to the Minister.
