Vol. 183 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emigration to United States.

1.

asked the Taoiseach whether the number of emigrants from this country to the United States is limited to a fixed quota; if so, what was the quota for each of the years 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959 and 1960; whether the quota for each of these years has been filled; and what is the number who have already left this country for the United States in the current year.

Apart from special categories such as the spouses and children of United States citizens, the spouses and children of natives of Western Hemisphere countries and ministers of religion and their spouses and children, the number of emigrants from this country to the United States is limited to a fixed quota. The quota for the years mentioned by the Deputy has been 17,756. Published reports of the Immigration and Naturalization Service of the United States Department of Justice indicate that the quota was not filled in the years 1956, 1957 and 1958. The 1959 report does not appear to have been published yet. The number of persons who have left this country for the United States in the current year is not available.
