Vol. 183 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ireland's Membership of G.A.T.T.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if a decision has yet been taken to join G.A.T.T.

The question of joining G.A.T.T. is under consideration but no decision has yet been taken.

Was the fact that a representative from G.A.T.T. came here recently part of the consideration which is being given to this matter?

Yes. The matter is under very active consideration. Naturally we desire to clarify the obligations inherent in membership. I should think it is probable a decision may be taken in the early future.

Does a decision to join G.A.T.T. depend in any way on the question of proposed changes in the trade relationships in Europe?

Only to the extent that it is likely that the proposals for the replacement of O.E.E.C. by a new organisation may involve relying to a greater extent than heretofore on G.A.T.T. for the resolution of trade problems in Europe.

Does the Taoiseach not consider it possible that the benefits of joining G.A.T.T. may outweigh the obligations?

That seems to me to be an argument.

It is a question.

It seems to me to be an argument.

In reply to the Deputy, I think that is possible.
