Vol. 183 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tramore Pier Capstan.

9.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the capstan at the pier, Tramore, County Waterford, has been without a chain and capstan arms for some years; and if in view of the fact that the provision of these items would be a great convenience to fishermen he will ensure that they are provided forthwith.

It seems to me that the provision of any such items is a matter for local initiative—either on the part of the fishermen themselves or Waterford County Council which is responsible for the maintenance of the pier at Tramore.

Will the Minister tell me why it is that his Department will vote substantial sums for fishing piers and improvements to fishing piers and repairs to fishing piers all round our coast but that they will never give even a small vote to any fishing pier in my constituency? I put down that question to see what the answer would be.

The question of allocation of boats is entirely a different matter. The question here is about the maintenance of the pier for which the Deputy's county council is responsible.

I never mentioned the allocation of boats. I mentioned the voting of large sums of money for piers all along our coasts where no fish is being caught. For instance, Greencastle, 2,000 boxes of fish.

The Deputy's turn may come.

"May" is right.
