Vol. 183 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Feale: Salmon Fishing and Stocks.

16.

asked the Minister for Lands what remedial measures have been or are proposed to be undertaken to obviate the danger to salmon fishing and salmon stocks in the River Feale as a result of the arterial drainage scheme.

Broadly speaking, the measures being taken by my Department to minimise the danger to salmon fishing and salmon stocks in the River Feale, as a result of the arterial drainage scheme, have taken the form of advising the Office of Public Works of precautions to be observed in the execution of the scheme. Thus, in the fresh waters, care has been taken to ensure that post-drainage conditions will afford facilities for the safe passage of fish on their upstream migration and will guard against their being exposed to danger from stranding. In the estuary, the cutting of a new channel has given rise to some unavoidable interference with certain fishing stations, but, when the new channel has become stabilised, it is expected that the over-all situation for net fishing will approximate to that existing pre-drainage. Conditions are kept under continuous observation.
