Vol. 184 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pensions of Former C.I.E. Employees.

46.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if it is proposed to increase the pensions of former C.I.E. employees in view of the fact that the C.I.E. pensions fund is sufficient to give a substantial increase in these small pensions.

Under existing legislation, the initiative for proposing amendments to C.I.E. pension schemes rests with C.I.E.

C.I.E. have informed me that it is not correct to say that the C.I.E. pension fund moneys are sufficient to give a substantial increase in pensions. The various pension funds in C.I.E. are kept at a level sufficient to meet obligations as determined by periodical actuarial examinations and no surplus moneys are available from the funds to meet increases in pensions.

I understand that wages grade pensioners of C.I.E. will be eligible for Contributory Old Age Pensions under the Social Welfare (Amendment) Act, 1960.
