Vol. 184 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Sugar and Sugar Products.

62.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he can now report the result of the representations made to the British Government on the levy of £16 a ton on Irish sugar and sugar products entering Britain, which appears to be a violation of Article V of the Trade Agreement between the two countries; if he would be prepared to have representatives of the Irish Sugar Company and the Irish Sugar Beet Growers' Association deal directly with the British Government on this matter; and if any steps have been taken to secure a decent export quota for Irish sugar and sugar products to the U.S.A. in view of the gap made by the withdrawal of Cuban sugar from the market.

In regard to the first part of the question, the discussions with the British authorities in this matter are still proceeding, and I am not yet in a position to make any statement. These are interGovernmental negotiations and the proposal in the second part of the Question would not be an appropriate or indeed feasible way of dealing with them. As regards the third part of the Question, representations have been made to the U.S. authorities for the establishment of an import quota for Irish sugar.
