Vol. 184 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Portarlington Housing.

73.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the great demand for and shortage of houses in Portarlington; and if his Department will make arrangements with the local authority and give sanction for the erection of an additional housing scheme in order that houses may be available at reasonably low rents for working class people and others who are in need of housing accommodation in the town.

There are no proposals before my Department from the Laois or Offaly County Councils for the erection of further houses at Portarlington. All housing authorities have been requested to carry out a survey of unfit housing conditions in their areas and to formulate proposals for further housing schemes to meet the needs of families living in unfit dwellings or statutorily overcrowded conditions and, where these needs have been met, for other families in genuine need of rehousing. The initiation of any such proposal in relation to Portarlington is a matter for the housing authorities concerned.
