Vol. 184 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Schools.

42.

asked the Minister for Education when it is intended to start the building of Mayfield school, Cork.

Tenders have been received for the erection of this school and are being examined at present by the Commissioners of Public Works. It is expected that a contract will be placed and building operations commenced at an early date.

43.

asked the Minister for Education when it is intended to start the building of Togher school, Cork.

I understand that the Commissioners of Public Works have invited tenders with a view to placing a contract for the building of this school.

Building operations are therefore likely to commence at an early date.

44.

asked the Minister for Education what the present position is concerning the erection of the new national school at Carrigaline, County Cork; and whether immediate provision can be made towards the modernising of the toilets in the existing school which is due for reconstruction.

The Commissioners of Public Works are at present examining the tenders, which they have received for the erection of the new girls' and infants' school at Carrigaline with a view to placing a contract at an early date.

The sketch plans for the adaptation and reconstruction of the existing schools, which will be reserved for the use of boys only, have been drawn up and my Department has sanctioned a grant towards the cost of the scheme.

The scheme includes the provision of water-flushed toilets.

As the two projects cannot be conveniently carried out concurrently the question of modernising the toilets at the existing school prior to the execution of the main scheme is being examined. It is proposed to ask the Commissioners of Public Works to have the matter investigated.

45.

asked the Minister for Education what progress has been made towards the erection of a new national school at Knocknagree, County Cork.

46.

asked the Minister for Education when the proposed new national school at Knocknagree, County Cork, will be erected.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 45 and 46 together.

The arrangements for the erection of new boys' and girls' national schools at Knocknagree are in the hands of the Commissioners of Public Works, who have completed preparation of the detailed working drawings and specifications. Arrangements are now being made to have a Bill of Quantities prepared with a view to inviting tenders. While it is not possible to say at present when the schools will be erected every effort is being made to expedite the case.
