Vol. 184 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Congo Forces Patrol Area.

41.

asked the Minister for Defence if, in view of the equipment and numbers of the Irish forces in the Congo, he is satisfied the patrol area allotted to them is not too large; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no information which would suggest that our troops in the Congo have been required to undertake the patrolling of areas which are too large in relation to their organisation or equipment.

The Commander of the United Nations Force in the Congo is operationally responsible for the performance of all functions assigned to the Force by the United Nations and for the deployment and assignment of the troops placed at the disposal of the Force. In this connection I would refer the Deputy to the statement made by the Taoiseach on the 2nd instant in reply to Question No. 26 put down by Deputy Browne, to which I have have nothing to add.
