Vol. 185 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Exports of Working Horses.

4.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of working horses (a) under seven years of age and (b) seven years of age and over exported during the years, 1957, 1958, 1959 and 1960 to the nearest available date.

The headings of the Official Export List under which permanent exports of horses and ponies are brought to account, distinguish between bloodstock and other animals. The total number of horses and ponies, other than bloodstock, returned as permanently exported in the calendar years 1957, 1958 and 1959 was 19,918, 12,554 and 15,751 respectively. The corresponding figure for the nine months January-September, 1960, was 10,963. Particulars of the ages of the exported animals are not collected in the basic export documents and it is not, therefore, possible to give, separately, the information requested at (a) and (b) of the Deputy's question. Separate figures for horses are not available.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say on what basis a decision was recently reached to prohibit at a future date the export of these horses?

That is a separate question. The Deputy has other Questions on the subject on the Order Paper.
