Vol. 185 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Furniture Tariff Review.

24.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the reasons for the tariff review on furniture made from wood, the procedure under which the review is carried out and the manner in which the various interests are represented at the hearing; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The review of the duty on furniture made from wood is being undertaken in accordance with a request made by the British Board of Trade under the Anglo-Irish Trade Agreements of 1938 to 1960.

The review will be carried out by the Industrial Development Authority and the procedure to be followed will be determined by the Authority. The Authority published notices on 17th October and 3rd November, 1960, in relation to the review in which they indicated that any interested person might make a submission to the Authority in relation to the subject matter of the review and that notice of intention to make a submission should be forwarded in writing to the Authority not later than 17th November, 1960. It may be assumed that all persons whose interests are likely to be affected by the outcome of the review and have signified their intention of making a submission will be given full opportunity of bringing their views before the Authority.

Could the Minister tell us what is the amount of the tariff on this article?

There is a 50 per cent. ad valorem duty on the import of wood furniture.
