Vol. 185 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Preservation of Wexford Abbey.

14.

asked the Minister for Finance if his Department will give further consideration to the preservation of Tintern Abbey, County Wexford, by the Commissioners of Public Works, so that this historic pile may be preserved as a national monument.

The Commissioners of Public Works have noted Tintern Abbey for consideration to be taken into State care as soon as circumstances permit. However, the large number of monuments already in State care and in need of preservation works will absorb the available resources for some time to come.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary give any indication as to when Tintern Abbey will be reached?

It could be taken over reasonably soon but the Commissioners are not very anxious to take over national monuments in respect of which they are unable to spend money on necessary repairs.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary indicate what he means by "reasonably soon"?

Within the next 12 months.

It will be a miracle.
