Vol. 185 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Railways for Passenger Traffic.

28.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether he has received representations urging that greater use be made of railways in and around Dublin for passenger traffic in view of the increasing traffic congestion on the roadways; and if he will have such representations considered in a comprehensive review of passenger transport problems in Dublin City and County.

The only representations on this subject received by me were those made in connection with the curtailment of train services on the Dublin/Bray line. The curtailment of these rail services did not, in fact, lead to any increase in traffic congestion on the roads because no additional bus services were necessary.

The provision of reasonable, efficient and economic transport services in Dublin as elsewhere in the country, is the responsibility of C.I.E. under the Transport Act, 1958. Insofar as traffic congestion is concerned, C.I.E. maintain close liaison with the Garda and the other public authorities concerned.
