Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Christmas Relief Work Grants in Dún Laoghaire and Rathdown.

21.

asked the Minister for Finance if Christmas relief work grants will be made available this year to Dun Laoghaire Corporation and to Dublin County Council for work in Dun Laoghaire and Rathdown; if so, how much money in each case; and what is the location of the scheme in each area, the approximate numbers who will be employed on each scheme, and the duration of such employment.

An allocation of £5,000, subject to a local contribution of £1,250, total £6,250, has been made from the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote, 1960/61 for winter employment schemes in the Borough of Dun Laoghaire. In addition, savings on the 1959/60 schemes, amounting to £1,902 grant, £476 local contribution, total £2,378, are available for expenditure this year. No allocation has been made for Rathdown as such, but allocations have been made for two built up areas in that part of County Dublin, as follows: Dún Laoghaire suburbs, grant £400, local contribution £135, total £535; Sandyford, grant £200, local contribution £70, total £270.

Three schemes have been approved for Dun Laoghaire County Borough, located at Williamstown, at Dunedin, Monkstown Avenue, and at Sandycove. Schemes have been approved at Sandyford and at Newtownpark in Dún Laoghaire suburbs.

It is calculated that the Dún Laoghaire Borough allocation, amounting to a total of £8,628, will give approximately 700 man-weeks employment, equivalent to employing, say, 40 men over a period of 4 months. Taking into account the period of employment for unskilled men is normally limited to 8 weeks, it may be assumed that some 70 individual workmen in all will get employment.

The Newtownpark scheme in Dún Laoghaire suburbs is expected to give 12 men employment for 4 to 5 weeks, and the Sandyford scheme, 6 men for a similar period.

They are "made" in Dun Laoghaire with £8,000.
