Vol. 186 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trend of Employment and Unemployment.

17.

asked the Taoiseach if he will give a rough breakdown of the figure of 1,112,000 given in The Trend of Employment and Unemployment in 1959 as the number of persons at work, distinguishing between (a) farmers, (b) relatives assisting on farms, (c) employees, (d) own account workers (except farmers) and (e) all others.

The last occasion on which the basis information needed to make the estimates asked for by the Deputy was collected was at the Census of Population, 1951. In view of the lapse of time since then, and of the very inadequate nature of the information on changes in the proportions of the numbers at work in the categories specified, it is not considered that a reliable sub-division of the total at work can be made on the lines required.
