Vol. 186 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - North Strand Bombing: Payment of Compensation.

36.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of compensation received from the Federal German Government for damage and loss of life arising out of the bombing of the North Strand on 31st May, 1941; and if it is intended to make compensatory payments in respect of those citizens who suffered loss of life and loss of property in the bombing.

The amount of compensation received under Agreements with the German Government in respect of the North Strand bombing incident in 1941 was £327,000 approximately. Compensation totalling £344,000 in respect of citizens who were killed or personally injured on that occasion or who sustained loss or damage to their property was awarded under the Emergency Powers (Compensation for Personal Injuries) (Civilians) Scheme, 1942, and the Neutrality (War Damage to Property) Act, 1941, respectively. These awards were made as soon as possible after the incident.

Could the Minister say if any claims are outstanding?

With the Germans? No, that is all finished.

No, with the citizens who were involved.

That may be regarded as closed also.
