Vol. 186 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bandon Road (Cork) Subpostmaster.

78.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the name of the person appointed to the vacant post of subpostmaster at Bandon Road, Cork, recently, and his qualifications for the position.

Mrs. Eileen Lucey was appointed as Subpostmistress at Bandon Road, Cork. It would be contrary to established practice to state the qualifications of any of the applicants for the appointment.

Can the Minister say if a person who had been working in a clerical capacity for quite a long number of years was an applicant? Can he say why that person was deemed unsuitable and why a person who had never worked in a post office was appointed?

That is a separate question.

I did not say anybody was deemed unsuitable.

Can the Minister say why one was considered more suitable than another with long experience?

I made the appointment and gave the office to the person most suitable.

The person who was appointed had no qualifications whatever.

What does Deputy Casey know about it except hearsay?

The person was recommended to me by the Subpostmasters Selection Board.

And recommended also, I am sure, by somebody else.
