Vol. 186 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Attendance Statistics.

87.

asked the Minister for Education the percentage of children in the 14-15 age group and in the 15-16 age group who are attending whole-time instruction in (a) primary schools, (b) secondary schools and (c) vocational schools.

The whole-time attendance figures compiled in my Department in this connection relate to the 14-16 age group. For the 14-16 age group they are for National Schools 15 per cent., Secondary Schools 37 per cent., and Vocational Schools 19 per cent. The compilation of separate figures for the 14-15 and 15-16 age groups would involve an inordinate amount of official time and would not, I feel, be warranted. This is particularly so since it is well known that the great majority of pupils of the 14-15 age group who are in whole-time attendance at school continue to attend when they pass into the 15-16 age group.
