Vol. 186 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Land by Foreigners.

15.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that extensive holdings of land are being purchased by foreigners who evade payment of stamp duty by acquiring a pre-1947 registered company; and whether practical steps are being considered to prevent or control further large scale purchase of land in this country by such persons.

I am aware that holdings of land have been purchased by non-nationals through the medium of pre-1947 registered companies and that the 25 per cent. rate of stamp duty is not payable on purchases made in that way. The question of the control of transfers of land to non-nationals is at present under consideration. Stamp duty matters are involved and they will require to be considered in connection with the Budget. I regret that I cannot indicate in advance at any stage what proposals my Budget Statement may or may not contain.
