Vol. 186 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gratuity of Civilian Employee at Curragh Camp.

46.

asked the Minister for Defence the date on which Thomas Brennan, formerly a civilian employee at the Curragh Camp, became entitled to a gratuity under the Superannuation Acts; and why it has not been paid.

The Superannuation Acts do not confer any entitlement to gratuity on civilian employees of my Department. Under the Superannuation Act, 1887, however, an tAire Airgeadais, subject to certain conditions, may, if he thinks fit, grant a compassionate gratuity to such an employee.

The award of an interim gratuity was noticed to Mr. Brennan on 11 Bealtaine, 1960. A final award has now been made and Mr. Brennan has been advised of the steps he should take to receive payment.

Can the Minister state on what date Mr. Brennan ceased employment?

He resigned on the grounds of ill-health on the 31st October, 1958.

Does the Minister not think that delay is quite excessive?

Part of the delay was unavoidable. There seems to have been some slight excess delay, all right.
