Vol. 186 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Question. Oral Answers. - Collection of Road Tax Arrears on Commercial Vehicles.

12.

asked the Minister for Local Government the amount of arrears of 1960 road tax collected on commercial vehicles in January, 1961.

The information requested by the Deputy is not available in my Department.

How do arrears of road tax arise when people paid the full road tax in January, 1960? If they paid the full amount then, there should not be any arrears. I know people who taxed their vehicles for the full year and when they came along this year they were asked for arrears of road tax in respect of the previous year.

They must have been told what it was for.

They were told that unless they paid the arrears their commercial vehicles would not be taxed this year.

There must have been a reason for it.

I take it the Minister would know the reason?

I am quite sure the people in the Deputy's county, any more than in my own, do not pay out money just because somebody says they want it, unless there is a reason for it.

Many people do not know what the Government want money for.
