Vol. 187 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Suspension of Special Allowances.

33.

asked the Minister for Defence the reason for suspending payment of special allowances in the case of some of those who qualified for contributory old age pensions.

Despite the proposed increases in the appropriate annual sums with effect from the 6th January, 1961, for which the Army Pensions (Increase) Bill, 1961 provides and more favourable assessments of old age pensions as means which I shall refer to when speaking on the Second Reading of that Bill, there are cases in which special allowances will fall to be reduced or cease to be payable as a result of the persons concerned qualifying, as from the date mentioned, for contributory old age pensions as well as, in a number of instances, supplementary allowances for their spouses. In these cases, there is a substantial increase in total income and, in order that overpayments may be kept within limits, the special allowances have been suspended.
