asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will give particulars of (a) telephone statistics for 1960 and (b) postal telegraph and telephone statistics for 1959-60 in the form of replies of 6th April, 1960.

The information required by the Deputy is as follows:—

(a) Statement showing for the Telephone Service percentage increase over 1947 in (a) telephone traffic, (b) Subscribers, (c) mileage of trunk circuits, (d) numbers of staff for the year ended 31-12-1960.

(2.) The following table shows for the year 1959-60 the amount expended under the Telephone Capital Acts on the basis requested.

The total expended in the various categories does not correspond with the amount expended under the Acts as it is affected by the extent to which stocks of capital stores are run down. The amounts have therefore been expressed as percentages of the total cost of telephone capital works.

(3) The following table shows in respect of the year 1959-60 for each service the total, salaries and wages charged as expenditure, expressed as a percentage of the total receipts credited as income, in the commerical accounts. Salaries and wages of staff in connection with capital development and renewal works are excluded as these are covered in the commercial accounts by interest and depreciation provisions.
