Under the Defence Forces (Pensions) Scheme, the pensions payable to the widows of deceased officers of the Defence Forces who have twelve or more years' service and who die while in service and to the widows of retired officers in receipt of retired pay at the dates of their deaths (other than officers with less than twenty years' service who retired voluntarily) are related to the rank of the deceased officers and are as follows:—

In addition to the pension payable to the widow, a pension of £29 9s. 8d. per annum is payable during the mother's lifetime in respect of each child of a deceased officer—in the case of a boy, up to the age of 18 years and, in the case of a girl, up to the age of 21 years while unmarried. In the event of the mother's death, the child's pension is increased to £43 4s. 10d. per annum.
The Scheme does not provide for the grant of pensions to the widows of non-commissioned officers and men, however, are insured for the purposes of contributory widows' and orphans' pensions under the Social Welfare Acts.
