Vol. 187 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Nursing Service.

24.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that there is considerable dissatisfaction in the Army Nursing Service in relation to (a) salaries (b) promotion outlets and (c) arrangements for transfers; and, further, whether and, if so, when, he will accede to the request made to him by the Irish Nurses' Organisation to receive a deputation to discuss these matters.

25.

asked the Minister for Defence why Army nurses are not given the same facilities as local authority and voluntary hospital nurses are given to attend the refresher courses organised by the Minister for Health.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions 24 and 25 together.

I have received a letter from Cumann na mBanaltraí nGaedhealach averring that there is considerable dissatisfaction in the Army Nursing Service in relation to salaries, promotion outlets and arrangements for transfers. The letter also refers to working hours and refresher courses.

While I do not accept the implication in the first part of Question 24 I am examining the various matters raised by An Cumann and I hope to be in a position shortly to reply to the request of An Cumann that I should receive a deputation to discuss those matters.
