Vol. 187 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drafting of Electoral (Amendment) Act, 1959.

2.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Taoiseach the total estimated cost of drafting the Electoral (Amendment) Act, 1959.

The answer is "nil". The drafting of the Electoral (Amendment) Act, 1959, formed part of the ordinary work performed in the Department of Local Government and in the Parliamentary Draftsman's Office.

3.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Taoiseach whether any legal advice was available to the Government during and prior to the drafting of the Electoral (Amendment) Act, 1959, and, if so, the name or names or official designation of the advisers concerned.

There was available to the Government during the period indicated by the Deputy the legal advice of the Attorney General, Aindrias Ó Caoimh, S.C.

Has the Taoiseach any reason to believe, in view of the very serious and grave blunder which has occurred in relation to this Act, that the advice he will get on the next occasion will be any better?

I do not believe there was a blunder and I believe we got excellent advice.

What about the decision of the High Court?

Why did the Taoiseach not appeal to the Supreme Court?

For reasons which I have already explained to the Dáil.

Because he knew he was going to be hammered again.
