Vol. 187 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increases in Army Pay.

17.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware of the general dissatisfaction concerning the recent increases in Army pay, particularly in view of the fact that certain ranks have been excluded entirely from any increase; and, if so, if he will have the matter reconsidered with a view to an upward revision in the amounts in each case.

I am aware that dissatisfaction is being voiced in certain quarters in connection with the recent increases in Army pay. I would point out, however, that these increases compare favourably with those granted to other sections of the public service. I do not propose to review the matter at present.

As regards Officers, I would refer the Deputy to my reply of the 1st instant to questions by Deputy Sweetman.

Only Privates, Grade III and Grade II, that is, boy apprentices under the age of 18, did not receive an immediate increase in pay. These Privates do, of course, benefit when they are advanced to the higher grades of Private, i.e. Grade I, 1-Star, 2-Star and 3-Star. Such advancement is solely dependent on the soldier's own ability to pass the military tests for regrading in the rank.
