Vol. 187 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - British Income Tax on Irish Military Service Pensioners.

6.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that the British Revenue Commissioners demand that Irish Military Service pensioners now resident in Britain pay income tax in that country on the pensions paid by the Irish Government in respect of service against the British Army in Ireland; and if he will make representations with a view to ending this anomalous position.

As regards the first part of the Deputy's question I understand that Irish Military Service pensions received by persons resident in Britain are chargeable to British Income Tax. Similarly, British Military Service pensions received by persons resident in Ireland are chargeable to Irish Income Tax. I do not regard this position as anomalous; and accordingly the answer to the second part of the question is in the negative.
