Vol. 188 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of Bundrows River.

15.

andMr. McLaughlin asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that good arable land continues to be flooded by the Bundrows River between Counties Donegal and Leitrim; and, if so, if he will arrange for the drainage of this river as soon as possible.

The Drowes River will be considered in due course for treatment under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, but owing to the extent of present commitments, I cannot say when it can be reached. The carrying out of arterial drainage works on this river would involve serious interference with valuable fishery interests and that matter will require investigation and consideration.

Could some arrangement not be made with the fishery owners to enable this work to be done and thereby drain a large area of arable land?

We had some preliminary investigations carried out over a year ago in connection with this river. In addition to the important fishery interests involved, there is the consideration that the river drains Lough Melvin, part of which is in the Six Counties, and the drainage would necessarily involve lowering of the level of the lake which, again, would necessitate consultation with another authority.

Could that not be done?

We are doing the best we can.
