asked the Minister for Defence the number of (a) officers (b) n.c.o.'s and (c) privates at present serving in the Congo; and the rates of daily pay and allowances paid to each category.

There are at present 68 officers, 187 non-commissioned officers and 396 privates serving in the Congo. They receive the normal pay and allowances appropriate to their rank and service as prescribed in Defence Force Regulations and in addition are paid an overseas allowance at the following daily rates:—

In addition, all ranks are paid an allowance of 9/- per day by the United Nations.

Do we recoup any of our allowances from the United Nations?

The normal rank pay and allowances are payable by us in the first instance and the overseas allowances are recoverable from the United Nations.
