Vol. 188 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grazing Facilities for Kildare Smallholders.

15.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will arrange that pending allotment facilities for small-holders in the Kilkea locality, County Kildare, land will be made available by the Land Commission for cows and dry stock which were previously accommodated on the Kildare and other local estates.

The only lands on hands of the Land Commission in this locality are those on the former Estate of Lord Kildare, on which grazing and tillage lettings were made last month by public auction.

Small lots were offered, but no interest was shown in them.

Would the Minister mind telling the House what was the extent of the small lots? My information is that no lot under forty-five Irish acres was offered.

The Deputy raised this matter before and I told him I would have his suggestions examined. In fact, as an illustration, the auctioneer did ask those present whether they would be interested in one acre or two acres and got nobody to bid on that proposition.

Is it not a fact that the only lots he put up were those in excess of forty-five acres?

That is not true.

Will the Minister give the exact figures?

If the Deputy puts down a question asking for the exact figures I shall give them to him. I assure the Deputy that those present were not content to bid for an acre or two acres, or did not appear to be.

Is the Minister aware that none of the local people is so aware?

The Deputy must be out of touch with the local people or he would be so aware.

I know more about the local people than the Minister.

That is debatable.
