Vol. 188 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - 1916 Plaque in G.P.O.

5.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the considerable public disappointment concerning the design and lay out of, and the divided words in, the recently erected 1916 plaque at the G.P.O. in Dublin; and if he will state who designed it, who executed it, and how much it cost.

6.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the widespread criticisms of the plaque recently erected at the G.P.O. Dublin; and if he will arrange to have a more suitable plaque erected in its place.

With the permission of An Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 5 and 6 together.

I am not aware of disappointment and criticisms such as those referred to by the Deputies. The form of the plaque was settled by the Office of Public Works and the carving of the inscription was undertaken by a well-known artist, Mr. Michael Biggs. The total cost of the work was approximately £400. It is not proposed to alter the plaque.
