Vol. 189 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Síochána Stations.

9.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he has any proposals for (a) the erection of new Garda stations and (b) the improvement of existing Garda stations in Laois-Offaly; and if he is satisfied that the Gardaí have ample, comfortable accommodation in all stations in the area.

Stations listed for replacement in Leix-Offaly are: Mountbolus, Shinrone, Banagher, Portarlington, Shannonbridge, Ballickmoyler, Abbeyleix and Ballybrittas.

Improvement works are under consideration for Clonaslee, Rathdowney, Ballylinan and Portlaoise. When these schemes have been completed, reasonably comfortable accommodation will be available for the Gardaí in this division.

Has the Parliamentary Secretary any idea when work will commence on the reconstruction of these stations? Portlaoise station is in urgent need of attention.

We are getting on as quickly as possible. I cannot say exactly when work will start on Portlaoise station, but it will be as early as possible.

Something will be done this year anyway?
