Vol. 189 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - “Buy Irish” Circulars.

17.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of "Have you been buying Irish" circulars recently sent by his Department to addresses in the Dublin area; and why the addresses did not contain the postal district numbers as requested by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs.

18.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if it is a fact that a circular letter, which did not bear the postal district number as recommended by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs, advocating the purchase of Irish goods was addressed by his Department to members of the general public.

With the permission of an Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 17 and 18 together.

The number of "Buy Irish Now" leaflets of the recent issue addressed to persons in the Dublin city area was approximately 130,000. It was arranged to use the addressing facilities of the Electricity Supply Board as these provided a convenient means of securing that the leaflets would be distributed as widely as possible. I understand from the Board that the addressing system used in connection with the issue of the leaflets is in process of being replaced by a new system which provides for the use of the Dublin postal district numbers; and that the new system was not available when the envelopes were prepared. I also understand that the addressed envelopes were posted in batches which were due for delivery in the same areas of the city, and that this helped to a substantial extent to make up for the transitional lack of the district numbers.
