asked the Minister for Finance the number of candidates who qualified in open competitive examinations for posts as Writing Assistants, Clerical Officers, Staff Officers, and Administrative Officers in each of the last ten years, the number offered appointments and the number of appointments made.

The reply is in the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to have circulated with the Official Report.

NOTES: 1. The excess of the number of offers over the number of appointments is due to the fact that some candidates who succeeded at the competition did not accept appointment or failed the medical or oral Irish tests.

2. Staff Officer posts are not filled by open competitive examination.
