Vol. 189 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Common Market: Approaches to Six County Government.

7.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Taoiseach whether any approaches have been or are to be made to the Six County Government to discuss the dismantling of the present customs barriers between North and South, which must follow impending membership of the Common Market by this country.

The answer to the Question is in the negative.

I would draw the Deputies' attention to the fact that the dismantling of Customs tariffs within the European Economic Community is carried out multilaterally by virtue of the provisions of the Rome Treaty, and not as a result of bilateral arrangements between the countries concerned.

May I take it, so, that the Articles of the 1938 Agreement will go by the board, the articles which allowed British subsidiary companies in this country to place restrictions on the development and expansion of purely Irish companies, such as the restrictions that have been placed recently on the products of the Irish Sugar Company?

That is not a relevant question.

A bit of sabotage, as usual.

Somebody should dehydrate the Deputy.

The moment of truth for the phoney Irish industries is on its way.

We were waiting a long time before the Deputy took an interest in Ireland.

That was one of the white elephants.

Do not be cross. It does not become the Deputy.
