Vol. 189 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification in Berehaven Peninsula.

9.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when it is proposed to extend the rural electrification scheme to the districts not yet served in the Berehaven Peninsula, County Cork.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that there are only three rural areas in the Berehaven Peninsula which have not been supplied, namely, Cahermore, Tuosist and Bonane. These areas have been considered by the Board from time to time for development under the Rural Electrification Scheme, but have not been successful.

The Board are not in a position to say when supply may be extended to these three areas.

Why is the Minister unable to say whether the supply will be extended to these areas? Has he not received representations from one of these areas with a view to securing an extension of the supply? Why can he not say when it is likely the supply will be extended?

It depends on the canvass being successful, so that, with all the various contributions to the capitalisation of the scheme, the E.S.B. can afford to do it on the basis arranged for all areas under the rural electrification scheme.

If I inform the Minister that the canvass in the Cahermore area is successful, would he pass that information on to the Board and ask them to review the position?

In case the E.S.B. is misinformed, I shall certainly pass on any information given by the Deputy in regard to the area.
