Vol. 189 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pollution of Rivers in Dublin.

13.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the fact that a bad impression is made on tourists by reason of the objectionable appearance of and odours from the River Liffey, caused to a considerable extent by the industrial pollution of the River Camac; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

14.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what steps can be taken to prevent factory operators from polluting rivers with industrial waste to the detriment of natural amenities and the tourist trade.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take questions Nos. 13 and 14 together.

The prevention of river pollution is primarily the responsibility of local authorities. I have no function in the matter.
