Vol. 189 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Condition of River Camac.

17.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the danger to public health and damage to the amenities of adjoining areas, including the River Liffey, by reason of the filth of the River Camac; and what duties should be discharged by the Dublin County Council and the Dublin Corporation to prevent a continuance of this sorry state of affairs.

18.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government whether either the Dublin County Council or the Dublin Corporation have submitted to his Department any scheme to prevent the pollution of, or to diminish the objectionable odours from, the River Camac.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 17 and 18 together.

I have not received any proposals relating to the River Camac from either Dublin Corporation or Dublin County Council.

In regard to the question of danger to public health, there is a general obligation on health authorities to investigate probable sources of infection and to take such steps as may be necessary to remove conditions favourable to infection. I understand that pursuant to this obligation the Dublin Health Authority keep the condition of the river under constant review and that it is not considered a danger to public health. As regards any injury to amenities, it would be open to the sanitary authorities concerned to take appropriate remedial action but there is no statutory obligation on them to do so.
