Vol. 189 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meat Exports to West African States.

22.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he is aware of the demand for carcase meat in the emergent West African states; and, if so, if any arrangement to conclude a trade pact for the export of such produce to these countries is contemplated.

The Deputy can rest assured that the potentialities of these markets are being kept under constant review and that should it be found that the expansion of exports to them would be facilitated by the conclusion of trade agreements steps will be taken to that end.

The Minister is no doubt aware of the recent trade delegation to one of the emergent countries. I do not think any agreement resulted other than an agreement for the export of asbestos sheets. Does he not consider that we should concentrate on the agricultural side of exports, which is so essential to the economy of the country?

Both agricultural and industrial exports will be taken into account in any review.

They do not appear to be.
