Vol. 189 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Store Cattle and Beef Prices.

25.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will indicate the reasons for falling prices in both the beef and store trade in the past three weeks.

I am not in a position to do more than to cite the following main reasons which I have obtained from those closely in touch with the position for the recent fall in prices of cattle and beef:

(1) Increased marketings of fatstock in Britain since 1st April due to the early grass season and to the increase in the guaranteed price;

(2) Recent arrivals on the British market of substantial supplies of cheap imported beef;

(3) Availability of increased supplies of other meats.

(4) As is usually the case, the easing of prices in the fatstock market has also influenced the trend of prices in the store market.
