Vol. 190 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State of Offaly Roads.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the deplorable state of the public and county roads in the Durrow area, near Tullamore, County Offaly; if he will arrange for an officer of his Department to visit the road which passes the Catholic Church at Durrow to the county boundary and which is in a great state of decay; if road grants have been made available for the road from Ashfield to Lahinch; why funds have not been made available to complete road work from Kildaingean to the county boundary; and if in view of the increased traffic on these roads he will make grants available without delay.

I am not aware that the roads in the area referred to are in the condition alleged by the Deputy. I understand that repair works are in progress at present on the first road and that sections of the other two roads are listed for improvement this year out of the county road improvement grant. It is a matter for the county council, when considering their annual road works schemes, to consider the claims of particular roads for repair or improvement out of funds provided from rates or with the aid of the grants available from the Road Fund. These grants have been substantially increased in each of the past two years. For 1961-62 they include the main road improvement grant of £34,800 and a county road improvement grant of £59,700.
