asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that there have been a number of fatal accidents in recent years at the cliffs on Howth Hill; and if he will arrange for the erection of warning notices and suitable fencing and also for the provision of a patrol at week-ends during the summer season.

I am aware that there have been a number of fatal accidents in recent years at the cliffs on Howth Hill. It is not clear, however, to what extent persons making normal use of the cliff walk were involved. Some of the accidents were due to rock climbing on the cliff faces. The question of the precautions which could be taken to prevent accidents to persons using the cliff walk is one for the local authority. I am arranging to have the Deputy's suggestions in this regard brought to their notice for consideration in so far as they may be found to be practicable and likely to be effective.
