Premises for use as a Garda substation with married quarters for one Garda are being purchased at this centre, but adaptation works will have to be carried out before the premises can be occupied. I am informed by the Commissioners of Public Works that arrangements are being made to have these works carried out.
In the meantime the policing of this area will be performed by the members of the Garda Siochana stationed at Ballingeary.
Will the Parliamentary Secretary state when it is proposed to have a resident Garda in Inchigeela?
As soon as the works referred to are carried out, someone will reside there.
The Minister has changed his views then with regard to staffing these local areas with Garda.
That is not so.
It must be so because the Minister rejected pleas in this House not so long ago for a resident Garda.
Since 1st December, 1958, the intention has been to have Inchigeela as a one-man station.
Pending the development of this intention of having a one-man station, is it the Parliamentary Secretary's policy to proceed with the closure of small stations such as he is doing with Inishannon?
Each particular area is considered on its merits. If it is decided that proper policing arrangements can be made in any particular area by the closing of uneconomic and wasteful substations that is done. There is no such thing as a general decision. Each area is considered on its merits.
Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there are stations which could very well be closed but not the particular one to which I have referred? Deputy MacCarthy is in a position to bear me out in that.
It has no reference to Inchigeela.
