Vol. 191 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nurses' Rations.

5.

asked the Minister for Health whether he will take steps to ensure the standardisation of the charges paid by nurses in respect of rations, and to ensure that such rations are of a satisfactory quality.

I have no functions in relation to the charge for rations supplied to nurses employed in Voluntary Hospitals.

The charge for rations supplied to nurses employed in health authority hospitals is a matter primarily for the health authority concerned. Prior to the most recent bonus award, the deduction in respect of rations was within the range of £91 to £95 a year. Following that award, the question of an increased deduction for rations arose and an increase of 6d. per day was applied to certain categories. I understand that in cases where the deduction was increased, health authorities are considering the abandonment of the increase and a refund of the extra deductions. I have informed health authorities that I have no objection to this adjustment.

I have no reason to doubt that the quality of the rations is other than satisfactory.
